Sea-Monkeys and the Lies of Marketing Departments

In the 1970s my comic books regularly had full page ads for Sea-Monkeys. They were drawn as little aquatic primate families, each a few inches in size. The description included:

  • “the most ADORABLE, entertaining pets you’ve ever owned!”

  • “They swim, play scoot, race and do comical tricks and stunts.”

  • “Raise a Sea-Monkey family consisting of Mom, Dad and their babies”

  • “… they LOVE attention, If YOU like pets, you will LOVE owning SEA-MONKEYS!”

I bought some, and boy was I disappointed. They were brine shrimp.

And with that lesson, I learned not to trust marketing departments.
